Utility potholing is performed to expose utility lines that are below ground. It is done to keep crews safe as they work underground, to avoid incidentally running into a utility line while working. When the process of utility potholing begins, a worker will create a basic pothole that has a diameter of 9 to 12 inches. From there they will make use of a vacuum excavator to dig down into the ground until the utility is located. The wet and/or dry soil that is displaced because of the vacuum excavator will be stored in a holding tank to be replaced once the work is complete.
